Head Girls Basketball Coach Stephen Thomas
Before Coach Thomas was named the head coach of the LN girls' basketball team in the spring of 2022, he was a member of the coaching staff for the previous 5 seasons serving in various capacities under Coach Giffin and Coach Sorrell. Coach Thomas was the head JV coach for three seasons, and then was an assistant varsity coach for two seasons. He was on the staff that led the team to back-to-back IHSAA state championship appearances in 2019 and 2020, including the IHSAA state championship in 2020.
While in college at the University of Dayton, Stephen played for the basketball program that made an appearance in the NCAA March Madness Tournament in 2009. Stephen finished his collegiate career at IUPUI Voted to the five-man Summit League All-Newcomer Team by the league's coaches, media and sports information personnel and was named one of 65 finalists for the 2012 Bob Cousy Award, given annually to the nation's top point guard.
In his first year as head coach, he led the 2022-23 team to the MIC conference championship and had an incredible post reason run. The team won the IHSAA sectional championship, the IHSAA regional championship, and a spot in the Final Four. Monica Williams was named to the IBCA All-State team. The 2023-24 team spent the entire season ranked in the top 10 in the state of Indiana, finishing with a record of 18-6. His current overall record is 37-16 (.698).
Presently, Stephen is in his 9th year of teaching in Lawrence Township; he has participated in the DBAC Teaching Licensure Program, Dr. Smith’s Teacher Leadership Academy and is currently the Director of the Wildcat Restorative Alternative Program at Lawrence North High School.
Coach Thomas and his wife Courtney, who also works in Lawrence Township as an administrator, have two daughters, Chloe and Olivia.
