Head Baseball Coach Richard Winzenread
Coach Richard Winzenread became the head coach at Lawrence North in 1992. He attended Southport High School playing both Basketball and Baseball receiving All-County and All-Sectional in both. He started four years for Hanover College’s baseball team making All-Conference and All-District while leading Hanover to Conference champions and District runner-up his senior year.
In June 1986 he was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles as a pitcher where he blossomed under the guidance of former Major League pitching coach Mark Wiley. His career was cut short by injury but took away a great deal of knowledge about pitching and baseball from his years with the Orioles.
In the spring of 2008 Southport High School honored coach Winzenread by inducting him into the school’s Wall of Fame for his accomplishments in both basketball and baseball at Southport, Hanover and the Orioles, as well as his coaching accomplishments at Lawrence North.
His coaching resume includes being chosen as the Coach of the Year in Indianapolis and Regional Coach of the Year in both 1995 and 1999. In 1999 he was also chosen as the Indianapolis Star’s Super Team Coach of the Year and named to coach the South All Star team leading them to a three game sweep over the North. In 2015, 2016 and 2019, he was named the District Coach of the Year.
Under coach Winzenread’s guidance Lawrence North won the school’s first Marion County Championship in 1995, and won the county tournament again in 2019. He has also guided his Lawrence North’s squads to 6 Conference championships, including 3 in a row (2008, 2009 & 2010) and 5 total in the extremely competitive MIC. Lawrence North has also won 7 Sectional Championships, 2 Regional Championships and a Semi-State Championship in 1999 with a State Runner-Up finish in 1999 under Winzenread.
During coach Winzenread’s tenure the program has produced 13 players that have been voted to the South All-Star team and 11 players that were voted All-State.
Coach’s interest are golfing, fishing and attending any event his kids are in. When not coaching he enjoys spending time with his wife Laura, son Jake, and daughter Natalie.
